Mural Celebrates Community, Sustainability in 91ºÚÁÏÍø

A vibrant mural created by students and staff in the 91ºÚÁÏÍø has been hung in the Legacy Centre at the Norberry Board Office and now stands as a lasting tribute to the division’s first-ever “Learning with the Land: A Gathering to Celebrate and Dream,” held May 22 at The Forks.

The mural, painted on large plywood panels, features a tree inspired by the Learning with the Land logo. Its branches are adorned with colourful leaves, many of which bear a word written by students at the event to represent their personal pledge toward Indigenous land-based learning and sustainable development. Words like “love” and “respect” appear, as well as words in diverse languages.

The project was led by teacher Denise Miller, who described the mural as a symbol of collective growth. The tree, she explained, represents the life cycle of learning within the school community. Leaves placed on the lower half of the mural signify both the contributions of graduating students and the nourishment they provide for those who follow.

“The leaves were symbolic of the land itself, but also how each individual person can help everything grow together as a community,” Denise said.JUN_1674.jpg

Students who helped paint the mural expressed pride in their contributions. Aarya, a grade 12 student, said, “It's honestly just very beautiful… It's really special, because I'm graduating this year. So, I can say, wow, I was able to help in this project. People coming into the school are going be able to enjoy it for years to come.”

Jayde, a student artist in grade 9, relished the opportunity to help out. “I love painting. I really liked painting the tree,” she said, adding that she appreciated the collaborative nature of the project.

The mural now serves as a visual reminder of the division’s commitment to land-based learning and sustainability. It also honours the voices of students, whose pledges will continue to inspire future generations.
